tears for kurup

As an aside and addendum, here’s an interview with IO Interactive’s Jens Peter Kurup, the game’s director, about critical reaction to Kane & Lynch. The Gamespot review he mentions is here.

Three interesting things:
1) The game’s actual market was younger teenagers and not adults.
2) He saddles Jeff Gerstmann, writer of the Gamespot review, with most of the blame for the game not selling well/getting bad reviews.
3) While I agree with his desire for group-written reviews, or at least the underlying idea of multiple perspectives in dialogue with one another, the end result can never be more than a poor compromise that fails to represent the interests of any of the groups it seeks to represent. Since a game review isn’t legislature but, in fact, a game review, it is fundamentally a ridiculous idea.
